The Camino Real Ranch
|
Location:
To the South of the Bay Area in the rolling coastal
foothills, North of Salinas and Monterey, the little Rancho
Camino Real occupies a small portion of an historic
8,000-acre property and grass-fed cattle ranch.
Horses are kept in pasture year round and enjoy the variety
that a working ranch provides. In addition to exposure to
cattle, the horses are familiar with a variety of livestock,
including cottontail and sharing pasture with the active
local ground squirrel community.

Bloodlines and Horses:
Two distinct Colonial Spanish Horses are separately bred to
preserve their rare bloodlines.
Choctaw: Young Choctaw stallion, Atocha was selected to
perpetuate the dun color factor within the Choctaw breeding
project, and consistently produces boldly marked zebra-dun
foals, which are beautifully proportioned, balanced and
highly social. The ranch managers have nicknamed Atocha,
‘the Gentleman’ for his gentle and polite demeanor. He leads
the bachelors group and still remains ‘one of the guys’. The
Choctaws are very intelligent, gentle and historically do
very well in endurance and stock work, though they are all
round horses that could excel in any endeavor including
driving and jumping.
Wilbur-Cruce: Our Wilbur-Cruce
stallion Diamond
has excellent bone, strong, healthy feet and a sensible,
gentle, and affectionate temperament. He produces confident
and athletic foals with lots of heart, which would do well
in any discipline. Our stallion’s line carries gait and his
full sister is both laterally and horizontally gaited!

 |
Training:
All horses are pasture bred, raised and nurtured in small herd groups to
provide natural socialization. Our horses are kept in
pasture year round, as this supports sound physical and
social development.
All remain barefoot, having very sound and hard, well-shaped
feet, needing only the occasional trim. Babies are
handled and introduced to grooming, bathing, halters, leading
and basic ground work.
Colonial Spanish Horses love people, and spending time with
them is a high priority. The stallions are kept near mares
and enjoy socializing with their foals and yearlings.

 |
Sales:
Horses may available for lease or purchase at any time, which
may
include geldings, stallions, mares or yearlings. Foals are
available for sale, but remain with their dam and herd until at least one year of age. This is important for
both their
social and emotional development.
All ‘adoptions’ are made by contract, with responsible, well-qualified
applicants, which might include a
breed-back agreement to preserve these critically endangered
bloodlines. All horses remain part of the extended family of Rancho Camino Real
and it is our desire that
horses acquired from us always have the option of returning
to us.
It is important that in addition to loving and caring for
them that you ‘get your horse out there ’ to show them off
whether enjoying a trail ride or in the competition arena.
We know that you’ll want to!
